The advent of social media has revolutionized the creation, sharing of, and interaction with
intellectual property. This paper delves into the effects of social media on Intellectual
Property rights and protection. While analysing its opportunities, and challenges, it seeks to
make recommendations for ensuring a balance between private ownership and public
ownership of intellectual property. It recognises the ease with which users can share and
reproduce copyrighted content without permission and discusses new forms of creative
expression and sharing, as well as opportunities for Intellectual Property owners to license
and monetize their content. It highlights the relevant legal frameworks on intellectual
property rights as on social media in Nigeria. The paper highlights the challenges of
enforcing Intellectual Property rights in the digital age and emphasizes the need for
strengthening the enforcement of existing laws, harmonization with international standards,
and innovative solutions to address online infringement. It examines the role of digital rights
management and specialized Intellectual Property courts and tribunals in navigating the
complex social media landscape. Ultimately, this paper seeks to provide a comprehensive
understanding of the intersection of Intellectual Property and social media, informing policy
and legal frameworks that balance creativity, innovation, and protection in the digital era.
