LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORKS FOR COMBATING ORGAN TRAFFICKING: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF NIGERIA AND GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES

Abstract

Organ harvesting is one of the most vital advances in modern medicine globally. It is a surgical
procedure that enhances the quality of health and longevity of human life. Over the years, there
has been an increasing need for organ transplantation across the globe. Organ harvesting
requires a donor who consents to harvest or remove a specific organ.
This article, therefore, seeks to embark on a comparative study of the legal framework for
trafficking in persons for organ removal in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The aim is to
ascertain the adequacy of Nigerian law to curb the scourge of trafficking in persons for the
purpose of Nigeria.
The research adopts a qualitative research methodology using a doctrinal method of legal
research. The research finds that the legal framework for trafficking in persons for organ
removal in Nigeria and the UK are similar for all intents and purposes. It recommends the
appropriate measures the Nigerian government may explore in combating the menace of human
trafficking in the country.
