LEGAL QUEST TO UNDERSTANDING THE NEXUS BETWEEN INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS: A NOVEL JOURNEY

Abstract

This article critically examined the nexus between international environmental law and human
rights from a global perspective. The article adopted the doctrinal research methodology, with
primary sources of information distilled from international conventions and treaties, while the
secondary sources of information were drawn from journal articles and internet sources. The
article found out that there is a need for a more robust and effective international legal framework
to protect human rights and the environment, as well as a need for increased political will and
resources to address these issues. In addition, it is important to recognize the intergenerational
and global nature of environmental harm, and to take steps to ensure that future generations have
access to a healthy and liveable planet.The article concluded that the nexus between human rights
and international environmental law is complex and multifaceted; that there are several
challenges that arise in this area, but there are also several potential solutions. The article made
some salient recommendations such as the need for more robust international treaties and
agreements that protect the environment and human rights, enhance capacity and resources,
promote public participation, consider intergenerational justice and incorporate the concept of
environmental justice amongst others.
